Raymond and the Ripple Effect
On a recent visit to Trader Joe’s Market, I rounded the corner to the canned food aisle, where I saw an employee on his knees, hunched over. I recognized from my years working in a grocery store that he was pulling product from the back of the shelves to the front, which is known as “facing.”
These shelves are built with very little space between them, and the employee had to practically contort his arms and shoulders to face the cans properly.
Reaching for some black beans, I said, “Facing product can be a real pain.” He looked up and said, “Yeah, I don’t know who left it like this. I’m finding lots of stuff in the wrong place. It’s worth it, though.”
He explained that by taking the extra time to sort the cans and put them in the appropriate spots, whoever was on shift after him would have an easier time. “They’ll be placing the order for tomorrow’s shipment, and if I take a little extra time to organize it now, we’ll probably have to order less and save the store some money. It’s a ripple effect.”
Complimenting him on his work ethic, I said, “It’s great that you recognize how your efforts are impactful.” He thanked me and introduced himself as Raymond.
This short but important interaction reminded me of the power of kindness and consideration for others. It was evident to Raymond how beneficial his actions were to both his coworker and the store overall, but the evidence isn’t always so apparent.
Often, we can’t foresee the ripple effect that our gestures of goodwill, consideration, and friendliness can generate. People are carrying heavy mental and emotional loads, and some live with equally heavy hearts.
When we take these actions, they convey the message “I see you, and you matter,” which is food for the soul, and these days, many are feeling especially hungry.

If more people recognized the ripple effect of their actions the world would be a better place. TJ is lucky to have such an employee

I've had several pleasant interactions with TJ employees. They enjoy working in the light-hearted, non-corporate atmosphere.

Good for you for noticing and acknowledging his efforts. Just a couple of minutes of recognition can make a person's day a happy one.
