August is National Wellness Month

In 1948, the World Health Organization redefined the term “health” as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This updated and holistic definition was a blueprint for what would become the modern wellness movement.
Though activities like yoga and meditation have been practiced for thousands of years, the concepts of wellness and self-care are relatively young. In the 1970s, civil rights activists framed self-care as an act of political resistance. Poet and activist Audre Lorde said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
In 2018, the Live Love Spa launched the National Wellness Month campaign, encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyle habits to live more vibrantly for themselves and their loved ones. Since then, the internet and social media have fueled a boom in the wellness industry.
As a fitness trainer of 26 years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how exercise, balanced nutrition, and effective stress management impact one’s quality of life and self-perception.
