Can the moon influence human health?

News Flash

In elementary school, we were taught how the moon's gravitational pull impacts our oceans' tides. Many scientists are now investigating if and how the moon influences behavior and physiology in some people.

A sleep-tracking experiment involving university undergrad students and Indigenous community members in Argentina showed nearly identical sleep patterns on nights leading up to a full moon. This parallel amazed researchers because of the Indigenous peoples’ high exposure to natural moonlight and the near-absence of it for the students.
There’s speculation this is due to a type of ancient “lunar cycle” sense that developed in hunter-gatherers.

Scientists believe investigating the moon’s effect on human health, especially sleep quality, can advance new treatment approaches for conditions strongly tied to sleep, such as bipolar and metabolic disorders.
