The Virtue of Humility

News Flash

In this article, psychology professor Jen Cole Wright discusses something we all have in common to varying degrees—self-centeredness. She talks about the downsides of this trait, i.e., the struggle to see things from other points of view, difficulty interpreting the world around us objectively, and how "it messes with our ability to appreciate the ethical worth of others."

Professor Wright believes humility to be the most foundational virtue and an antidote to self-centeredness. Humility can reduce the hyperfocus we place on ourselves and more on others' wants and needs and allow for increased acceptance of our shortcomings and imperfections.

I agree wholeheartedly humility is extremely important for healthy relationships be they personal, business, or casual. Being in the presence of a "me, me, me" person is exhausting and is nothing to look forward to. Good article; thanks for posting.

I believe humility is a noble aspiration for men.
Women are often forced into humility through male subjugation because patriarchal norms are alive and well in most faiths. Religious hierarchical structures have been in place and strictly enforced for over 2000 years. That's not going to change. In fact, religions are pushing back against the more modern woman.

Men enjoy the privilege of sitting on top closest to God, and they enjoy being served by anyone they deem lower. This is why they created the hierarchy to begin with.

As more women achieve independence in the workplace, more men turn to fascism to reverse their gains. Humility is not anywhere in sight. Quite the opposite. But it's something men should diligently work toward. But who will teach them?

This is a good article and the start of an important topic. Thanks for sharing.

I believe more modern men have come a long way from some decades ago, both spiritually and socially-speaking. Mahatma Gandhi was a true example of humility.

On the other hand, there are many women who rule the roost and are also self-centered.

I believe humility soothes us and softens the wounds within us. But it's a lifelong challenge.
