Cop Rock

News Flash

On an episode of CNN’s “The Nineties”, Steven Bochco, writer and producer of shows like Hill Street Blues, LA Law, and NYPD Blue, reflected on one of his few TV “failures”—Cop Rock.

In the interview, he talks about how he believed this show, which was part police drama and part musical, was going to be his next innovative hit. It turned out to be anything but and was canceled after 11 episodes. Though Cop Rock wasn’t the success he thought it would be, Mr. Bochco remained proud of the project and was happy he tried, though he admitted he wouldn’t want to do it again.

He viewed failure as a learning opportunity that provides valuable experience and not as something to tie your identity to. Belief in oneself, commitment to a cause, and perseverance bring to mind names like Malala Yousafzai, Rosa Parks, Edison, and Einstein.

Whether well-known or otherwise, who are some figures you admire that are synonymous with these characteristics?

Abe Lincoln was repeatedly defeated, but he never gave up. Sally Field was told she wasn't pretty enough for movies but went on to win two academy awards. No one paid attention to Greta Thunberg, and then they did.

We learn from all of our experiences. We take what we learn and move forward. Steven Bochco did just fine despite the Cop Rock flop.
