God Dares Me To Be Me
A friend of mine recently suffered complications from a surgical procedure and was kept in the hospital for 6 weeks. Her condition was touch-and-go and the doctors couldn’t guarantee she was going to make it. Like anyone in that situation, her perspectives on life were significantly affected.
I’m happy to report that she weathered the storm. While she still feels somewhat physically “broken,” that’s a big improvement from a few weeks ago. Since then, she’s been pondering, assessing, and reassessing her sense of self, her place in the world, and what truly matters. She recently posted this poem by playwright Rich Orloff, “God Dares Me to Be Me,” as its message strongly resonates with her.
“On one of those days
When the facade of my identity
Cracks under the pressure of living
God whispers to me:
I dare you to be you
Stop acting like a tulip pretending to be a rose
A rabbit trying to be a porcupine
A pancake pretending to be an omelet
There is a galaxy within you
Don’t reduce it to a smattering of stars
Rejoice in each glowing ember inside you
Befriend the ones lurking in dark shadows
I have placed within each human
Both an animal and the Divine
If you deprive yourself of either
You will never fully experience life
I created you to be you
Instead of an imitation of someone else
Enjoy the adventure of unlocking the mystery
Of the possibly glorious you”

Thanks for sharing your friend's story and Rich Orloff's beautiful poem! I wish your friend all the energy and hope she'll need to become her truest self and express it gloriously. It is possible!
Perhaps the world's population is most anxious and angry at this time because of the constraints forced upon us by the unnatural but financially profitable world. More than ever, it drives a deeper wedge between who we must be to survive and who we should be in order to thrive.

Finding our way in this world is usually a rough road for which no one has prepared us. Your friend's has been particularly tough. But the good news is, she's received some "guidance" on what she wants to change and where she wants to go. She's taking charge and going for it, and good for her! I wish her the best health from this time forward and a new world full of possibilities. Thank you for posting her story and this beautiful poem.

Oh my goodness....I would love to see this beautiful poem read daily to every child, further reinforced in school...a girl can dream right... of a better sense of well being for our children right!
I am so happy to read the improvement of your friend. I so admire her using this complicated and scary time to ponder, asses and reassess her place in life. I can imagine she is not the same woman she was prior to the surgery.
Thank you for sharing her journey of looking at reality.
