Tom's of Maine busted by the FDA

I've recently become more interested in chemical-free and sustainably manufactured personal care, household, and clothing products. Tom's of Maine, known for products like toothpaste, deodorant, and soaps, has built a reputation as "being good for you and the planet." However, recent findings from the Food and Drug Administration cast a shadow over this claim.

Batches of its toothpaste were made with water containing multiple types of bacteria, including strains linked to blood, lung, and urinary tract infections. The FDA also reports the same infected water was used to clean factory equipment.

Tom's of Maine chose not to investigate approximately 400 complaints about the color, taste, and smell of its toothpaste, and upon inspection, the FDA found a "black, mold-like" substance within inches of production machinery. The company, acquired by the Colgate-Palmolive corporation in 2006, says it's working with the FDA to remedy these issues.
