Tom's of Maine busted by the FDA
I've recently become more interested in chemical-free and sustainably manufactured personal care, household, and clothing products. Tom's of Maine, known for products like toothpaste, deodorant, and soaps, has built a reputation as "being good for you and the planet." However, recent findings from the Food and Drug Administration cast a shadow over this claim.
Batches of its toothpaste were made with water containing multiple types of bacteria, including strains linked to blood, lung, and urinary tract infections. The FDA also reports the same infected water was used to clean factory equipment.
Tom's of Maine chose not to investigate approximately 400 complaints about the color, taste, and smell of its toothpaste, and upon inspection, the FDA found a "black, mold-like" substance within inches of production machinery. The company, acquired by the Colgate-Palmolive corporation in 2006, says it's working with the FDA to remedy these issues.
You can learn more about the FDA's troubling findings in this article from Fast Company, which has effectively warned me off Tom's of Maine.

This is so maddening. Tom's reputation was built on being a clean, safe alternative to the "big guys," but now that it's been hijacked by Colgate, it's just one more company who doesn't care about its customers' safety. Very disappointing, but I'm thankful you posted this article so I now know the truth about Tom's.

Whoa...this is outrageous and so disappointing being a past user of Tom's. Thank you for the post.

Thank for for this illuminating post. Toms always seemed to be a step ahead of other toothpaste makers, but little did I know it was streptococcus!

Indeed! So gross.🤮

Sadly, with Project 2025 taking center stage in the new administration, FDA and its inspections will be abolished and consumers will be clueless to the toxins lurking in whatever they may consume.
Wilsons Grave
Just plain tragic and so wrong. People used to ask "what's this world coming to?" Now we know 'cause we're there and it ain't pretty.
