Profits over people, again

News Flash

Stories of corporations selling products to consumers found to be harmful and dangerous are nothing new. Shamefully, the same is said for corporations who know their product is harming people and yet continue to market and sell it aggressively.

We can add Philips Respironics to the list of such corporations. Philips manufactures breathing machines used by infants and adults, including some 700,000 military veterans. To make their machines quieter, they began packing their units with industrial foam.

Philips hid complaints of the machines spewing particles, dust, and debris to protect their rising stock prices. Also hidden from the government and consumers were test results that showed the machines caused the foam to degrade and release chemicals like formaldehyde into users' respiratory systems.

Cutting deals with medical equipment suppliers and ignoring warnings from its own engineers, Philips enjoyed record profits while its customers developed a host of medical issues, including throat and kidney cancer.

Machines have been recalled and millions of dollars paid out, but has justice been served?

The US is far too lenient on corporate cover-ups and crimes. Executives should be held criminally responsible and be sent straight to the slammer. Then this behavior would stop.

Yes, I bet if they had to give back their pay check and stock each time a warranted complaint, things would change very fast.
