Is this plastic recyclable?

News Flash

How great it would be if each and every plastic item could be recycled and remade into something useful. Maybe one day, but we're not there yet.

This article from Consumer Reports clears the confusion on which plastic items should be put into your blue bins and how to further increase the likelihood that they will actually be recycled.

I checked my Long Beach recycle rules, and as far as plastic is concerned, they're only taking 1, 2, and 5 now. Who knew? Thanks for posting this; very helpful. 👏👏👏

Very eye-opening. I read the article and still am confused about what's recyclable and what's not. Not sure what the numbers 1, 2, and 5 are about. I will re-read the article again. And how do we now manage plastic bags?

If you look for the “chasing arrows” recycle symbol on the bottom of the item and there’s a 1 or 2 in it, it’s recyclable. I’m glad Long Beach is accepting 5’s as well.

The article indicates that plastic bags shouldn’t be put in the bins, unfortunately. Up till now, I’ve been routinely putting them in.

I think many major supermarkets have a bin specifically for plastic bags. I found this link so you can search by zip code for the places nearest you.
