The use of antibiotics in beef and pork has been going on for decades. In 2019, antibiotic-resistant bacteria killed over 1.2 million people globally, and more than three million others died from diseases where antibiotic resistance played a role.

In the European Union, antibiotic sales for livestock have been falling, but the U.S. isn't likely to follow their lead. A lack of incentives along with logistical challenges, and of course, profit, all serve to keep the use of antibiotics in meat production going strong.

This article details how, for a short time, the FDA was on the right track with discouraging antibiotic use in beef, pork, and chicken. But it didn't go far enough, and sales and usage by meat producers are back on the rise.

This is one of those cases where the consumer has to make a choice: either consume meat products infused with antibiotics, or avoid meat and let your doctor prescribe antibiotics only when you need them.

I agree. The second option is much safer and better for the planet. There are plenty of other healthy protein choices that don’t contribute to greenhouse gases.
