Loneliness ambassador
The Covid pandemic impacted societies around the world in a myriad of ways. Among them—a deepening of loneliness.
A 2021 Harvard study found that 36% of all Americans, including 61% of young adults and 51% of mothers with young children feel “serious loneliness.” Depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and early mortality have been linked to chronic loneliness.
In an effort to combat this epidemic in New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed none other than world-renowned therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer as the state's honorary ambassador to loneliness.
The 95-year-old Dr. Ruth, who lost her parents in the holocaust, knows a lot about both loneliness and resilience and says, "I will work day and night to help New Yorkers feel less lonely.”

The loneliness epidemic is global, triggering the WHO to launch a global initiative to combat it. All of us can find purpose and meaning in uplifting others whether it be conversing online through responding to another’s messages and posts, or by sharing time in person. Giving others our time is the solution.
