Kids moving beyond their stutter

News Flash

It's estimated about 1% of the world's population stutters, though about 5% of children go through a period of stuttering. A summer camp at Vanderbilt University in Nashville brings together such children to enjoy fun, camaraderie, and complete acceptance.

"Write a letter to your stutter" is one of the activities given to the children to directly address their condition and help navigate the emotions tied to it. Understandably, some kids spoke of hate, anxiety, and withdrawal, but amazingly, some regarded their stutter as a confidence builder, a unique characteristic, and even a blessing.

I felt inspired after listening to this short story. How about you?

The kids that spoke were all so sweet. I'm grateful they have a fun place to go where they feel safe and heard. My heart felt good after listening to this. Thanks for sharing it.

I hope that every kid who stutters can find a caring program like this. It's tough to be made fun of as a kid. It leaves scars and can turn you into a bully. Maybe more kids like these will grow up to launch their own similar camps. I hope so. Thanks for sharing this tender story.
