Feeling apathetic?

News Flash

Apathy, defined as a lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance, has been a shared experience among many in the country for a few months, myself included.

The following quote by famed zoologist Jane Goodall is worthy of taking in and reflecting on to influence our thoughts and actions.

"The greatest danger to our future is apathy. We can't all save the world in a dramatic way, but we can each make our small difference, and together those small differences add up. Every single person makes an impact on the planet every single day. The question is: What kind of impact do you want to make?"

It's a very good question to ask. Unfortunately, when people are apathetic, they don't really care anymore about what kind of impact they make. The remedy is to discover why they are apathetic, what triggered it, and what would bring them out of it.

I can fall into apathy when I see everything as too big and impossible to fix, especially by little ol' me. However, I find doing little things that put a smile on someone's face—calling someone who needs an ear, talking to my 91-year-old aunt, or helping someone who needs an extra hand—gives me enough joy to keep a few clicks above apathy. I do know you have to make a concerted effort not to fall into the quicksand of apathy because it will definitely pull you under.
