An exciting medical discovery within our bodies

News Flash

Although medicine has been studied for thousands of years, scientists and researchers continue to make exciting discoveries about the human body and its inner workings.

One such recent discovery is that natural antibiotic-like substances are contained within human proteins. This is welcome news as the threat of antibiotic-resistant infections continues to grow.

Scientists knew some proteins help regulate blood flow and immune response, and believed they may also fight bacterial infections. After creating synthetic versions for testing, researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona observed several proteins fighting bacteria, such as E. coli, often contracted from contaminated food and hospital stays.

Particularly impressive lab results came from HBP-5, a protein that significantly reduced bacteria levels in multiple organs. Traditional antibiotics can harm healthy cells and cause side effects, but HBP-5 and other proteins appear to be safer and more targeted toward specific infections.

I hope for a future where discoveries like this lead to a healthier population with less reliance on pharmaceuticals of all types.
