A deadly baseball field?

News Flash

For six former members of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, “America’s favorite pastime,” as the game is sometimes referred to, may have been deadly.

All six of the players, between 2004 and 2022, died before age 60 from glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Lab tests on the artificial turf used in Veterans Stadium, where the Phillies used to play, revealed 16 different types of PFAS—chemicals linked to numerous health conditions, including certain cancers.

Little is known about the effects of repeated skin contact with PFAS, but summer temperatures on the field climbed to over 100 degrees, potentially releasing chemical vapors inhaled by players.

The Phillies organization claims brain cancer experts have told them a link between the turf and the players’ cancers can’t be proven. However, six glioblastoma deaths out of roughly 500 players is three times higher than the average rate.
