Campbell's Soup admits to polluting Ohio river

News Flash

“Campbell’s soup, it’s mmm, mmm good,” was the product’s marketing slogan for many years. What’s not so good, however, is that the Campbell’s company has admitted that its Ohio facility violated the Clean Water Act more than 5,400 times.

According to a lawsuit filed by environmental groups, the facility repeatedly exceeded permitted discharge limits, releasing pollutants such as ammonia, phosphorus, and E. coli into the Maumee River, which feeds into Lake Erie.

Environmental advocates argue that the factory’s discharges have contributed to the harmful accumulation of algae in Lake Erie, posing risks to human health, wildlife, and pets.

Campbell’s says it has made efforts to comply with environmental rules, but groups like Environment America argue the company needs to take greater measures to clean up operations and face penalties for past violations; penalties that truly motivate Campbell’s to take real action.

You can learn more about the lawsuit and the environmental impact of the factory in this article from USA TODAY.

When I was a kid, I didn't like breakfast food, so I had a bowl of Campbell's tomato soup before going to school. I did that for years. As an adult, I've learned that what appears to be good doesn't make it so. That's now the case for Campbell's. They, and corporations like them, think it's their right to do whatever they want, even if it does great harm to our land, rivers, animals, and people. Corporate profits come first, no matter what. They knew they were wrong and did it anyway. Whatever they have to pay will never make up for the harm they've done.

I no longer eat soup from a can, but I hope those who do stop buying Campbell's.

Regulations are going away. Investigations into polluters or corporations who put dangerous chemicals into our cooking utensils, food, cleaning products, pesticides, and more, are also going away. Everything this administration is doing, including shutting down all research taking place at the EPA, convinces me they don't care about you or me or humanity in general. But they very much care about their donors, and have now unleashed those in the corporate world to do whatever they please.
