The Pie That Left Me Speechless

I’ve written before about the fitness class I teach at a neighborhood seniors’ center, and how rewarding it’s been for me. Hearing from attendees that my class is something they look forward to and that it makes them feel good is always uplifting. However, I learned that my influence has impacted someone who has yet to take my class.

As last week’s session concluded, I was chatting with some students when a woman named Nora came in. Nora is a longtime member of the center and a friend of one of my regular students, but has never attended herself. She walked up to me holding a box with both hands.

I greeted her, and she opened the box to reveal a pie. Nora said, “I think you’re a wonderful teacher, and I enjoy watching your class, so I made you this banana bread pie.”

For a moment, I was speechless. I hadn’t known that Nora had observed my class before, nor that she thought so highly of me. I accepted her gift with heartfelt thanks and gratitude for her immense kindness.

That night, I cut myself a slice of pie and smiled when I thought about what it represented. This dessert was a reminder that the impact of our heart-centric work can stretch beyond what’s visible, and that the ripple effect of our goodwill is real.
