Finding the power to make a difference

District topic

When I first watched Rose Tourje’s video, I knew it was a story I wanted to share. Here was this accomplished interior designer in Los Angeles—successful, respected—who saw office furniture being thrown out of a building as if it were garbage. Perfectly good desks, chairs, and tables, all heading straight to the landfill. And instead of turning away, she let that moment change her.

Rose walked away from her successful career and did something incredibly brave. She used every connection, every bit of knowledge, and determination she had to build something better. She founded ANEW, and because of her, nonprofits around the world now receive furniture that once would've been wasted. She’s their hero.

Watching her reinforced my belief in our ability to shift things for ourselves and others. We all have that power inside us, even if it’s buried under fear or routine. Rose’s story reminded me that when we act from the heart, we can make a real, lasting difference.

If you have an experience or story about people finding their power and using it to make a difference, I’d love to hear about it.

The ripple effects of ANEW's inspiring work spread wide and far.

Ms. Tourje was clearly meant to witness the office furniture being discarded so it could light the fuse of a new and rewarding passion project. Her interior design career was likely satisfying, but this endeavor fulfills her and those she works with.
