Banned Book Week

Every fall, Banned Books Week reminds us that the freedom to read is never guaranteed. This year’s theme, “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” is a pointed reminder that efforts to silence voices and restrict ideas are still on the rise. The American Library Association reports that 72% of recent censorship demands came not from individual concerns but from organized movements, often backed by elected officials. That reality underscores what’s at stake: when books are targeted, so are the rights and futures of readers, especially young people.

Banned Books Week is a warning and a call to action. Since its launch in 1982, this week has brought together librarians, teachers, students, writers, and readers of every stripe to stand up for open shelves and open minds. As ALA President Cindy Hohl reminds us, “We must always come together to stand up for the right to read.” Supporting libraries and the freedom to read is about defending democracy itself. This year's Banned Books Week is October 5 – 11.
