When The System Failed, Community Stepped In

District topic

No one should have to spend their 80s working to pay off medical bills, especially after honoring a promise to care for the person they love. But that's exactly what Gary Saling is doing. He kept his wife at home through her battle with dementia because, as he puts it, "I took vows."

Years after she passed away, he's still carrying the financial burden of that promise, and bags groceries at a local supermarket in Utah to pay the medical debt.

When local shopper Deanna Johnson learned about his situation, she opened bank and Venmo accounts and encouraged the community to help Gary.

I was angry and heartbroken when I saw how the system failed Gary. But as I watched the video, I was extremely uplifted to see how much people cared about him and wanted to help him pay off his debt sooner rather than later.

An honorable man. Wish others would take a lesson from him. Good post! Thanks.
