Years ago I had the privilege of moderating a classroom forum, Lawyer in the Classroom, sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. The students were all young teenagers, mostly recent immigrants from El Salvador, who were not only fluent in English but also asked the panelists brilliant questions. I was awed by their curiosity, interest, and grasp of the topic being discussed. I felt they all had leadership potential and seemed determined to excel. I was so grateful for what I experienced in that classroom because it contradicted the negative public perceptions of this new population that was coming to California as a result of the war in El Salvador. The odds were against them, but they seemed blind to them.
Thanks for sharing Katya's story. It reminded me of the kids I met in the classroom.
