Teen Highway Angel Honored

District topic

These days, when an accident happens, a lot of people reach for their phones to record and post, but keep driving, not wanting to get involved.

Nineteen-year-old Juan Mendoza did the opposite. When he witnessed a crash on a rain-slick Texas highway, he pulled over and ran to the car.

Pushing past the deployed airbag, he helped the injured couple inside, Juan and Adriana Omata, staying with them until first responders arrived. They say his quick action made all the difference.

In this video, the Omatas meet their “angel” Juan for the first time since that day, and are finally able to hug and thank him.

With a little help from David Begnaud from CBS, there are a few heartwarming surprises for Juan too.

Another heart-grabbing story that moistened my eyes. More evidence that humanity is good, but can be much better if everyone had courage enough to follow their heart. Thanks for posting!

I loved this kid. Such a good soul.

"If it bleeds, it leads" has been a policy for news organizations for decades, but CBS did a fine job here getting Juan in EMT school and sharing his story with America.

I thought it was so sweet that he credited his parents for making him the good-hearted person he is. He's certainly not one of those it's all about me people.
