Painting Feelings She Couldn't Express In Words

High school can be a tough time for teens. Many have self-image issues that cause them to disconnect and isolate from schoolmates who were once friends.

When I saw this story about Molly Schafer from Waunakee High School in Wisconsin, her difficulties reminded me of some of the kids I knew who struggled during their teen years.

Fortunately, Molly found a genius way to reconnect with her one-time friends by giving them a gift they would always remember. Her classmates were stunned to say the least.

I’m imagining each recipient of her portraits being both surprised and thrilled. It was probably the most humbling moment of their life to be chosen as a subject and honored so beautifully by someone they hardly noticed. What a lesson that must’ve been.

I was amazed at the number of paintings and how good they were. Thanks for commenting.

The challenges of identity and self-discovery during the high school years have become exponentially more difficult with social media. Self-comparison to one's contemporaries now extends far beyond the campus, where an Instagram feed shows countless thousands of teens portraying lives that can foster feelings of unworthiness and isolation.

Fortunately, Molly doesn't stare at a smartphone but immerses herself in the canvas, creating unique and exquisite artwork that surely leaves its recipients awestruck and elated. I know that's how I would feel.
