Middle schooler's invention wins $25,000 top prize
After a neighborhood restaurant burned down, Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, CA, was inspired to create a fire-detection device that identifies fires faster than an average smoke detector and sends a text alerting users of the fire. Out of 65,000 middle schoolers, Shanya’s Genius invention won the top prize of $25,000 in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.
