When the World Turns Against You

Knowledge

From Gold Dust

“There are times in one’s life when the world seems to turn against us. Our motives are misunderstood, our words misconstrued, our advances are repulsed or met with icy coldness. Courage, patience dear disconsolate one! God is making a furrow in your heart where He will surely sow His grace.”

Here, Charlotte Yonge leaves us with a beautiful message to consider when things feel like they're falling apart. That is, God is at work opening up space in our heart so that it may be filled with grace.

Yonge was born in 1823 at the beginning of the Victorian era, and her life and writings reflected the values of that time which included devotion to God, work. and self improvement. She also adhered to the resurrection of Christ, the Trinity, the importance of prayer, and the strong belief that God has given each one of us a Guardian Angel to lead us on our path to salvation.

Slipstream

Oh yes, I'm sure everyone has felt let down, crushed, or shattered at some point in their life. That it may be seen as a furrow being made in our hearts for the sowing of grace is beautiful. Maybe I'll be able to look at it with more gentleness when it happens again.

Present Valley

Thank you for this beautiful quote.

We can all use a bit more grace.

Perhaps as I live into my new definition of unpacking forgiveness
a space will be opened up in my heart for grace to slip in (or maybe because of grace I have a new definition) along with personal peace, well being and boundaries. Either way I know from other experiences grace is a gift.

I like this analogy. Thanks for sharing.

When the heart hurts, it's difficult to imagine the heavenly gardener finding it suitable ground for planting seeds. As the passage points out, the pain is what can ultimately make the ground so fertile—such irony.
