Harvest Moon Rising

Although it's still warm here in California, summer is officially behind us. Fall has arrived, and nature has its own way of marking the change. On Saturday, September 26, the Harvest Moon will make its appearance, giving us one more good reason to look up from whatever we're doing and enjoy the sky.

The Harvest Moon got its name from a time when farmers depended on moonlight to help bring in the harvest after dark. Before electricity, that extra light was more than pretty. It was useful. 

Today, we’re not waiting for moonlight to finish bringing in the crops, but there's something nice about keeping the tradition of stopping to notice it. California will see the full moon Saturday, and we'll have the gift of it looking full for several days.

If you're somewhere else, check your local moonrise time, because the best viewing time depends on where you are.
