Shaking things up

Younited Front Pledge

When I went to the grocery store, I didn't plan on doing this, but I just started telling strangers when I noticed something wonderful about them. A cashier’s bright smile, a man’s vintage Hawaiian shirt, a woman’s bold earrings. I’ll admit, at first, it felt a little awkward, but the reactions surprised me. People lit up. Their faces softened, their posture changed, and they walked away lighter, as if being seen mattered more than the words themselves.

What I thought was a small gesture turned out to be something much bigger. Complimenting strangers has shifted me. I feel more open, more connected, and uplifted knowing that something I said brought a smile to someone. It’s such a simple thing—just a few words—but it reminds me daily that kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be powerful. Sometimes, noticing someone is enough.

Let’s shake things up together by pledging to slow down, notice others, and offer compliments freely. It’s as much a gift to ourselves as it is to the receiver.

Right now, people are dealing with a world gone off the rails, wondering what it's all about, and asking themselves: do I even matter?
In your own magnificent way, you've found a way to leave them with no doubt. Each compliment affirms: "Yes, you do matter, at least to me."

It's wonderful to shake things up humanely by uplifting others. So, I fully embrace and support this pledge, and thank you for sharing it with us.
