Hunger doesn't take a summer break.

News Flash

Samantha Figueroa, food operations manager for Caroline County Public Schools in Virginia, oversees an expanded summer meal program, distributing free food at 24 sites. A recent policy change allows meal distribution in rural areas, improving access for food-insecure families. This initiative, driven by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) and John Boozman (R-Arkansas), marks a historic shift in addressing child hunger.

It's great that the senators from Michigan and Arkansas worked to get such programs federal funding, but it is mind-boggling that many governors stand in the way of food access for the underprivileged. They likely view EBT and such programs as liberal "handouts" that incentivize laziness and if children don't get adequate nutrition, so be it.

Thank God for Ms. Figueroa and the others mentioned in this article for their heartfelt desire to get impoverished kids fed and their willingness to contend with the increasing logistical challenges to make it happen.

Yep, Ms. Figueroa and her team are real heroes as are Senators Stabenow and Boozman. Thanks for your insightful comments.
