Get Ready, California
Starting July 1, those familiar "sell by" dates will disappear from most packaged foods. California—the first state to require standardized food date labels—will instead use just two: "BEST if Used by" for peak quality and "USE by" for food safety.
The old "sell by" label was meant to help stores manage inventory, not tell shoppers when food becomes unsafe to eat. State officials hope the change will reduce confusion and keep millions of pounds of perfectly good food out of the trash.
Happy shopping!
