Civic Center
A genuine winner
Twelve-year-old Bruhat Somastood from St. Petersburg, Florida, made the news last week after winning the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee. Bruhat was one of 245 worldwide spellers competing for the $50,000 prize.
The competition narrowed to eight in the finals, then two, bringing Bruhat and another finalist face-to-face. Bruhat was crowned the winner after spelling 29 words correctly in a 90-second spell-off defeating his opponent who spelled 20 words correctly in the same timeframe.
Sadly, most of us missed this delightful story because all of the news was focused on the felon ex-president.
As a positive influence for our society, Bruhat is much more deserving of the spotlight. Congratulations and three cheers for you, Bruhat! You are a real winner!

I've seen shows that chronicle the months leading up to the competition, and the preparation is beyond intense. The ability to invest the necessary time and energy for practice on top of regular schoolwork is remarkable.
Nailing 29 words in 90 seconds is hard to wrap my head around.
You're right, this is better than news of trials and verdicts.
