On June 19, 1865, General Order No. 3 was issued by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for Texas slaves. Juneteenth, its name combining "June" and "nineteenth," has been celebrated all across the country for many years. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, and it is now recognized as a federal holiday.
On Saturday, June 17, the Long Beach Juneteenth celebration will be held at Rainbow Lagoon and will feature dance, music, art, speakers, and fellowship. Everyone’s welcome, and it’s free!
