Is God Still Gracious?
Has anyone noticed that a lot of people are talking about their spirit "guides" these days? This may reflect a trend to latch onto something more novel and personal than the almighty God, but holy enough to help us navigate a world that feels like it's coming apart at the seams.
I've been talking to my own guides for almost 30 years, so I'm glad other people are embracing something unseeable but divine operating in their sphere of consciousness, and doing their best to understand how it might help them.
Having been raised in the Greek Orthodox faith, I believe my guides are universal angelic beings. They have no corporal body, but as far as I can tell, they are omniscient and omnipresent.
Communing with anything invisible is deemed very "woo-woo," if not insane. And yet, countless scientists still embrace a bible wherein Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel, who announces the Lord is within her.
Most holy books are compilations of ancient stories of ordinary men or women recounting their own angelic visitations or visions from the heavenly realm. But, today, should someone make such a claim, they are quickly put on meds without question, as if heaven spoke to us only centuries ago.
Today, many of those who've been "touched by an angel" have podcasts, YouTube videos, and Instagram pages with countless followers. Many dispense advice from their guides. In some ways, it is its own "me-too" movement where people share their good experiences rather than bad, but there are also many false "prophets" who've jumped on the bandwagon just to claim their own fame and fortune.
My angels are plural, having only referred to themselves as "We"...I can't put a face to their love and kindnesses nor a name. They don't predict anything, but they know everything with certainty, and if it's important for me to know something about unforeseen, upcoming events, they will drop clues so that I can ask questions and learn more.
Sometimes, they just want me to know something about their realm, or God. Sometimes, it's in response to an issue I'm dealing with or a problem I need to solve.
Yesterday, they simply said, "Yanula," which they've never said before. But this is how they stop me and get my attention.
When they drop in unexpectedly with some word or phrase, it's often while I'm doing something mindless or routine like brushing my teeth or washing dishes. On rare occasions, the word is spoken in Greek—I think just for fun—but since I don't speak the language of my ancestors, I'm forced to turn to Google Translate.
I didn't know how to spell "Yanula" so Google Translate yielded no results. But when I did a general web search, I discovered that Yanula is actually spelled Yiannoula.
The first link in the search results provided a ChatGPT summary: "Yiannoula (Γιαννούλα) is a Greek feminine diminutive of Ioanna (Ιωάννα), itself the Hellenic form of the Hebrew Yoḥanan/Yehohanan, meaning “Yahweh is gracious” or “God is gracious.” I did not know this.
God is gracious.
So what does this have to do with me? I asked this question because I am genuinely curious, and I've learned that most one-word drop-offs from heaven are mere conversation starters.
Much earlier in the morning, I prayed for something I've never prayed for before. "Help me be my truest self and express it outwardly 100% of the time. Help me be more gracious."
As soon as the prayer left my thoughts, a quick response came back—they didn't mince words: "That's not possible when you're exhausted. The brain perceives exhaustion as a threat, much like it does hunger...it goes into fight mode to survive. No one is gracious while trying to survive." Yes, they said all of that word for word, utilizing my capacity to hear their invisible world much like one hears language spoken while dreaming and sound asleep.
Those words, spoken quickly and gently, comforted me. God was being gracious and forgiving me for not being my best self.
Only God is gracious 100% of the time. I am not. No one is. And no one should expect themselves or anyone else to be kind or gracious if they lack food or sleep.
On the up side, I hope to be a bit more gracious after doing my part by getting proper rest and more sleep.
This story is really about my angels' gracious way of making their loving presence known and helping me in the process.
It doesn't surprise me that heaven's presence is becoming more tangible, though unseen. The veil is lifting with good reason. Many have lost their faith. Many feel abandoned by an uncaring god—or worse, a perceived ruthless god. But my experience is one of heavenly love, care, concern, and helpfulness, despite living in a world where too many people suffer from hunger and exhaustion and struggle for something more.
So much is advancing now in society in ways we are not ready for. And much is being lost. We can't underestimate the radical, life-altering outcomes of such changes, including AI, climate and financial disruptions, pandemics, bioweapons, and enemies gaining access to our water supplies and energy grid.
Like frogs slowly bubbling to death in a cauldron, we've given ourselves over to the will of the world. It's only when the bubble bath starts to feel too hot, too uncomfortable, that we ask for God's help.
Heaven's angels are here now to help anyone who asks for help. They aren't religious, they are humane, and they are of God. Their growing presence and available nature is the truest sign that God continues to be gracious, despite the obvious failings of mankind.

Years ago a minister friend of mine told me about a book he read that pointed out that people of the "Bible times" often spoke of hearing God, and it was completely accepted as real—not an "auditory hallucination" or fake. I believe God comes to people in different ways so they're more accepting of the communication. Thanks for sharing your experience and allowing people to feel safe about receiving "the voice" and talking about it.
Evangel
I agree God speaks to us in different ways and through different means, such as when you're driving and your heard turns and notices a billboard with a special message that changes your mind about something or motivates you to take an action. Even finding a penny or feather on the ground is often, if not always, a message from heaven.

It sounds like you live in a beautiful world. What you describe is extraordinary. I agree this world needs so much help right now. But I don't expect much will change since people have their feet firmly planted in the whims of the world and not in the will of God. Still, I liked reading about your angels. They sound interesting and kind. Maybe things can change if the veil is lifting, as you say. Personally, it's reassuring to know that God is still gracious and working through his angels to give us a helping hand. Thanks for posting about your mystical experience.
Evangel
Thank you for your kind comment. I think change will come as long as people understand that it's up to all of us to turn the tide by going to the polls in record numbers. We as the voting public have the power to hold our leaders accountable or vote them out. But this administration has insidious plans to avert its ouster by any and all means.

This is another of your articles that I needed to read more than once to absorb fully.
I was reminded of when someone would ask in church youth group why God was extremely talkative in the Bible but not in modern times. I don't recall the specific answers, but it was always akin to "God works in mysterious ways."
Like many people, I've given my relationship with Spirit less attention when things were going smoothly. However, when thrown a hard curveball, I redoubled my efforts to connect. Your story serves as a reminder to tend to the crops that God and I are planting together, in the good times and the challenging times.
Thank you for sharing.
Evangel
Very thoughtful comment, as always. I definitely agree that god works in mysterious ways. I also think that if it hadn't been for the printing press, more people would be seeking god's voice and following it. Today, with blogs, podcasts, and AI spewing out everything you want to know about anything, it's easy to forget "In the beginning there was the word and the word was God." The voice has always been with us, but mass communication is smothering it, much like dirt smothers a fire.
Present Valley
I appreciated the way you shared your experience of God and angels. A lot to unpack here.
Several times over the years I have felt the presence of angels actually saving my life. Not that I could see a face or a body, but could feel the warmth of a hand for at least an hour. I am a firm believer.
When I was thinking about what I would name my Medicine Drum one day while driving the word Sula popped into my mind. I didn't even know if it was a word. I looked it up...in Hebrew it meant peace. Of course it did.
In my friendship group it is very common to hear people speak of receiving "downloads" or channeling. Yes, I think the veil is lifting.
I do hear God speak to me, short, quietly spoken words mostly at the sleep awake time in the morning. It never occurs to me to not follow through with the directive I was given, even though I might not want to initially.
I have been blessed to be able to connect with my husband on the spirit level. He always comes to me when I ask. I know it is him because with my eyes closed I see a brilliant ball of light and feel incredible joy...for a brief moment... then he leaves.
Thank you for starting this conversation for the community!

Thank you for your comment and sharing your own experience. The more people share their own personal experiences with hearing the invisible "voice," the more it will be normalized.
Evangel
Yes, thank you for sharing your wonderful experience. Homeless Valley has the right idea. More stories told, more normalizing the experiences we have. This way the uninitiated can trust it in themselves. God has a purpose for each of us.
I believe God does not waste time. Where there is a willing partner, he will get through and ask for their help on a myriad of things. In return he will help them in countless things. If you were looking for peace in the act of drumming, it makes perfect sense that heaven would have you "baptize" it in the name of Sula, even if you didn't immediately know why the name came to mind.
Again, thank you for sharing your beautiful connection with heaven.

Enjoyed reading this. There've been times when my mind's been all twisted up in mental nonsense, what you might call deep in thought, only to hear an intrusive phrase interject something wise which I know could not have been me. Thanks for sharing. Good to know God is still gracious. I agree.
Evangel
Thank you for sharing that. It seems like the random, intrusive thoughts you speak of were helpful to you. If so, and you acted on them, then I would imagine such thoughts pop in frequently. Whoever, whatever you call its source, it has your attention and can utilize you for the greater good of all.

This is very interesting, I'm going to have to read this a few times and digest it! Thanks for sharing!
Evangel
Oh, I'm so glad you found this to be interesting! By now, I am used to it all. From a Christian perspective, I think of it this way: Jesus said that the things he did, if we believed in Him, we could also do, and what Jesus did most often was talk to God and share what he heard. "For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak." I think that fundamental teaching is being missed today. But it doesn't make it any less worthy. I see your songwriting, in all its glory, as a beautiful example of that. Thank you for your comment!

God is gracious and God abides, even when I don’t feel it recently in my darkest moments. As a very cherished friend shared with me today, my mind can choose to remain in a dark despairing perspective, or I can choose to recognize it, and consciously make a shift to our loving gracious God. It’s an easy choice, working in the awareness and discipline to do this. As my mom would say, this too shall pass and everything will be okay, 🙏🏼💔❤️.
Evangel
Your mom is right. No doubt she's there with you in spirit reminding you to be patient and ride the wave as gracefully as you can. It's been said that patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while you wait.
So what can you do to have a good attitude? Sit quietly and listen to what comes through and write it down. It will be part of your history. And try to understand that any heavy challenge is a heavenly challenge to deepen and strengthen us in those places deep down and unseen that remain raw, tender, and vulnerable.
