Notable Quotable: James Agee On Human Potentiality
"In every child who is born, under no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and in each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life; toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terror, and of God."
— James Agee
By all appearances, humanity seems to have lost its way. But in one sentence, James Agee reminds us of our greater purpose. In each of us lies this knowledge of our responsibility toward others, toward goodness, toward preventing terror, and toward our own holiness.
Every newborn child is given this responsibility and higher calling by something beyond and greater than ourselves. But we don't cultivate anything so radical. Instead, we push our children to "excel" by grabbing the brass ring any way they can.
We could instead, from the youngest age, teach all children, regardless of race, origin, or religion, to embrace their higher calling and allow what they choose to "do" later in life or "grow up to be" unfold.
Consider how our world might change if our kids aimed their hearts and minds toward others, toward goodness, toward avoiding violence, toward the holiness of the greater good. Maybe we wouldn't all be complaining about the world we live in.

Brilliant quote, and I appreciate your take on it. What a different world it would be if goodness were freely given by everyone to everyone. Bullying, cruelty, and cold-heartedness are being applauded and rewarded. It's modeled by those at the very top of business and government for all our children and teens to mimic. It's heartbreaking, really.

I read this, and started to laugh. I truly tried to raise my kids in this way. I emphasized kindness towards others. I did not value competition in sports or getting into the best colleges as many of my peers did.i just wanted happy, well adjusted children. Guess what? That’s somewhat what I got. Unfortunately, it doesn’t pay the bills in this day and age. lol.

Maybe it does pay the bills...but if people can't pay their bills, it's because there's been a huge and egregious transfer of wealth to a very small group of industry leaders, and most people are powerless to change that injustice. Maybe that's the real problem in today's world—along with the fact that so many people feel belittled they aren't doing as well as some of their peers.
That said, your kids are so precious thanks to the love you raised them with.
Wonderland
Definitely a huge transfer of wealth and the demise of the middle class.
Thanks for compliments on my kiddos. To be honest, I would do it all over again. They are good people. And they are even financially wealthier than many of the kids out there today.

That's really nice to hear! Would they like to make a donation to Youtropolis? 😀

In addition to fomenting division and tribalism, the advent of social media has placed the highest value on self-absorption, looking hot, and portraying a lifestyle coveted by all the "regular people."
I'm hoping that the younger generation's hunger for a more tactile, genuinely connected, and "analog" life experience will foster an infectious kindness toward others.
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Mark 10:14
Evangel
True. Social media has forced normal kids into a cabal that diminishes them for who they are in order to sell, sell, sell and profit off them.

That's a great quote. Thank you for posting it. Sometimes I think people aren't happy unless they have something to complain about, but that's besides the point.
