Making Monsters
Photograph caption:
"Mad make-up - Artist Bob H. Burns, Burbank, has the formula for turning Lionel Comport into the monster, Mr. Hyde. Mortician's wax blended with cold cream makes a nice scar over his right eye. Fake blood, made from Vaseline and a chopped up red grease stick, gives the scar its nasty appearance. Liquid blood, made from corn starch and food coloring, runs down his cheek from the cut. For finishing touches Comport slapped on a wig and put in false teeth and a cape and vest for his coming out party."

No computer graphics back in those days, just good old-fashioned creativity. People like Mr. Burns set the stage for the amazing special effects and makeup of today.
