Shifting winds today alternately helped and threatened 500 exhausted firemen battling a 1,200-acre brush fire in the Hollywood Hills which destroyed 24 homes and damaged 30 others.

The blaze erupted at 7:43 p.m. Friday near Hollyridge avenue and Beachwood Canyon drive in the Griffith Park area. The fire was still burning today towards Burbank and Glendale on a northern-north-eastern-northwestern line in the vicinity of Mt. Lee and Mullholland, Vista Del Valle and Mt. Hollywood drives.
