Ask Yourself Why!

Knowledge

We do a lot of things, say a lot of things, often without too much forethought. But what if started to dig deeper as to why we do the things we do, say the things we say.

It's interesting to discover our intentions and motivations. And if we knew our true motivation would we still do or say it?

For instance, a friend comes over. You need to have a tricky conversation about borrowing money. You find yourself complimenting your friend, "Wow, you look great! Are you aging backwards?" Perhaps it's true, but maybe a little part of you is greasing the wheels for when you ask the dreaded question. That's your main motivation. Or you call a friend with whom you haven't spoken because you want them to house sit. But you don't start off with that. Instead, you say, "So, how have things been? It's been so long. How are the kids? Your work ..." You just go on and on. And right before you hang up, you say, "Oh, by the way, is there a chance you can house sit this weekend?" And there it is.

Not all motivation is bad motivation. In fact, motivation is good. You're motivated to call your friend because it's been too long and you miss them. Good thing.

At any rate, pay close attention to your motivations and intentions. You can ask why before you do anything, such as, watch TV, drink, eat, put on a certain outfit ...

You might discover there's a hidden motivation behind what you imagine the true motivation is.
