From A Research Paper To The Real World
Most people don't look at a car's tailpipe and see a business opportunity. Rohan Kapoor and Jack Reichert did. At just 18 years old, these two young entrepreneurs took an idea from an MIT professor's research and spent the better part of a year figuring out how to make it work in the real world.
What they came up with is called the Go Green Filter. It attaches to a vehicle's tailpipe and uses living microalgae, water, and light to help convert harmful exhaust gases into oxygen. They say it costs about $50 to build, and in testing, it cut vehicle emissions by 74%.
The students believe that if every vehicle in the world used their filter, global carbon emissions could drop by more than 16%. That's still a projection, not a proven outcome, but it's the kind of thinking that should get attention.
Starting a business around a new idea isn't easy. It takes guts to invest your time and money, bet on yourself, and bring something to market. Whether this ends up on millions of vehicles or not, these guys deserve a ton of respect for their ingenuity and courage.

Thank you for bringing Go Green Filter to our attention. I have never heard of this. I really like the idea of young people, students, continuing to be creative coming up with ideas to save our environment.
They definitely have my respect. I agree starting any new business is not easy and it requires courage, fortitude, perseverance, and of course some money goes a long way.

The MIT professor's research was brilliant. But, it's been said that ideas are a dime a dozen. The real work comes in evolving such an idea into a practical, cost-effective, real world solution. If it costs $50 to build, it should be mandated on every new vehicle. On older vehicles, the DMV could incentivize owners to add the filter by offering a discount on their next auto registration renewal.
