How it should be...

Wish has not yet been granted

I don't believe in defunding the police, but I DO wish that all police departments had a policy to screen and hire officers who possess the kind of emotional intelligence and compassion as this one shows in this video

Slipstream

Beautiful story; right out of the Bible—Good Samaritan. This officer is a good role model for others.

Yes! That's how I would want to be treated if I should ever fall into such despair. I pray for grace every day.

Wonderland

I wish our entire police dept. could behave like this. There are many really good people who go into this line of work because they want to help others. Unfortunately, you also get a few bad apples.

Homeless Valley

Yes, so true. Also, bad apples have been known to spoil the bunch.

Part of the problem may be that there isn't one required standard for police behavior, as far as I know. It's up to each city's police department. Also, there are different crime departments that may hire one personality type over another.

I think it would be helpful to have a standardized test all police departments could use—one that's administered in person by a psychologist, and is aimed at ruling out those candidates who clearly have anger or power issues, and hiring only those who are mentally stable.

Thanks for sharing those ideas. I like them.

Well Street

A heartwarming story. He may not be LAPD, but he's living by their motto, "to protect and to serve."

I support labor unions that work for fair treatment of workers and their rights. I've read about instances where police unions interfere with a department's efforts to discipline or fire a "bad apple" officer. Protecting cops who use their position for wrongdoing isn't a union's job.

Homeless Valley

I never heard about police unions doing that. But nothing surprises me anymore. It's like they're enabling or, worse, promoting unacceptable behavior. The law is the law. I get that a union lawyer might be hired to defend the cop, but hopefully the victim has a smarter lawyer.
