A lot of people say this law is absurd and will never hold up in court. It's hard to know what is right or wrong in terms of spying. Every country is doing it. But now it's known that endless scrolling on TikTok for dopamine hits will shrink your brain! If it were my kids, I would say "No, you're not putting this on your phone."
You bring up some very interesting points! One of the reasons some experts think this law is absurd is that the Chinese government has so many ways to surveil and get information on US citizens. Banning TikTok will not diminish China's ability to gather whatever intelligence or spread whatever propaganda it wants to disseminate. What it might do is further escalate a tit for tat censorship war between the two nations. China has already forced Apple for instance to not provide WhatsApp in its app store to Chinese citizens.
I agree about the tit for tat. I picture two male gorillas vying for superiority and making a show of it. But in the end, as you said, China is already deep into our computers through countless other apps, none of which are quite as notorious or prosperous as TikTok. Still, since it's kids who are most at risk for brain impairment or underdevelopment, it's parents who should responsibly alert their kids to the harm it's doing, and protect them as much as possible.
Banning an app that can bring significant economic repercussions and potentially ruin many influencers' income wasn't a decision taken lightly, I'm sure.
If it's true that the company is using TikTok for surveillance purposes and to threaten our national security, then it seems the ban is necessary. I acknowledge I'd feel differently if I relied on the app to make ends meet.
The fact that it's one of the few things that's found its way through the House and Senate and signed by the President since who can remember when makes me wonder if there may be more to it than we know. It'll be interesting to see what comes out over the next months.
