Who's Breathing New Life into Old Libraries?

News Flash

Over the past years, libraries have been thought to be on their deathbed as they tried to compete with the convenience and speed of the internet. But libraries are gaining new life as they become the popular go-to for many millennials and Gen Zers. One young patron stated, “I think people my age are craving something more authentic and looking for something real. What’s more real than books and physical material?”

Although there seems to be a renewed appreciation for books, today’s libraries aren’t just about books. They provide a place of peace and quiet away from the world’s chaos and many libraries have meeting spaces where people can socialize. Urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place” when referring to today’s libraries because they’re gathering places separate from home, work, or school.

Who would have thought we'd see a time when libraries became the cool place to hang out?

I recently read an article discussing how millennials and older Gen Zers are leaving dating apps, instead opting for in-person meetups in hopes of having more authentic and organic encounters. This, along with their appreciation for libraries, shows that the generations who've grown up with tablets and smartphones are feeling disconnected and hungry for things that are tangible and real. This is why vinyl records are enjoying a resurgence, too.

I wholeheartedly agree with Well Street. They closed so many library branches and cut their hours, I was concerned they would be permanently shuttered. Thanks for posting this very positive story.
