Notable Quotable: Romain Rolland On Gluttony

News Flash

Romain Rolland won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915. He was a French author and anti-war activist who was known during his time as the conscience of Europe.

His quote reminds us that wealth amassing practices interfere with the natural course of human progress. Such robber-baron activities are now illegal in most parts of the world, but those with excess money and power can easily circumvent roadblocks to enriching themselves further.

As financial talking heads speculate these days over who'll become the world's first trillionaire, families across the globe sit on pins and needles imagining who'll be next in their family to lose their livelihood to the technology that continues to enrich only a minuscule group of men.

Arianna Huffington wrote a book years ago called "Pigs at the Trough." It exposed the unholy alliance of CEOs, politicians, lobbyists, and Wall Street bankers. One that would enrich them, but shut everyone else out.

It's even worse now with billionaires not asking what they can do to make things better for everyone. They're in a race to become the first trillionaire.

Mr. Rolland had it right, even though he had no idea how sick these men would become.
