Notable Quotable: From The Heart Of Pope Francis

News Flash

Pope Francis was a rare marvel, a voice of dissent, and always fearless in speaking truth to power. He never wavered from the compassion of Christ, always advocating for the poor, the migrants, and challenging the global order that perpetuates social inequity, unjust wealth distribution, and climate change. The following quotes epitomize his legacy:

Encourage Generosity

This first quote praises the innate benevolence that thrives in youth, and shows us how to help them sustain a kind heart within the challenges of our material world:

“Let us encourage the generosity which is typical of the young and help them to work actively in building a better world. Youth do not solely need material things. Above all, they need to have those non-material values which are the spiritual heart of a people ... spirituality, generosity, solidarity, perseverance, fraternity, and joy.”

True Power

In this quote, Pope Francis summarizes Jesus’ definition of power, while admitting his own challenges in living up to such power:

“Jesus defined power, the true power is to serve, to do service, to do the most humble services, and I must still make progress on this path of service because I feel that I don’t do everything I should do. That’s the sense I have of power.”

Trickle-down Economics

This heartfelt quote highlights Pope Francis’ insights into the perpetuation of a global economic system that continues to decimate the world:

“Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.”

Godless False Prophets

This quote should be on everyone’s refrigerator:

“If one has the answers to all the questions that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble.”

This is a beautiful tribute to a wise man. He truly loved Jesus as it's shown in his words. He wasn't about power or church politics, he was about Truth; God's Truth. I pray the next Pope is as in love with God as this one. Pope Francis will be missed.

Thank you for sharing. Pope Francis gave all of us a reason to pause, and evaluate our thoughts and actions as he spoke truth to power. He embodied and strived to live God’s agape love, as evidenced by his actions. An example for all. May the next Pope build upon what Pope Francis progressively set it motion, especially in the area of completely eradicating sexual abuse within the church. 🙏🏼✝️

Thank you for your comment. With the loss of all reason in America's new order, there's a need for new leaders around the world to emerge who will speak to the power of love and justice and the need to advance an economic agenda that focuses on uplifting all people, as Pope Francis preached. Hopefully the conclave will bring us another such voice aligned with the true mission of Christianity.

Such wisdom from Pope Francis. The last quote is especially interesting because Francis says people in his position as religious leaders are fallible and capable of mistakes. This contradicts Catholics' belief that the Pope is never wrong in all matters of faith and morals.

According to a podcast I recently listened to, Pope Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI, was relatively unproductive in his role compared to Francis, and many still suspect he resigned for fear of closeted skeletons being discovered.

Speculation grows that the conclave will install a pope who will embody hardline conservatism to parallel the current global political climate. Fortunately, Pope Francis' balanced and real-world perspectives will live on.

I guess time will tell. Rik Torfs, a professor of canon law at the Catholic University on Leuven, recently claimed that most Roman Catholic cardinals who will vote in the Conclave are gay. Will they lean conservative?

Another way to judge who might become the next pope is by looking at the history of those who will be voting, specifically those cardinals who were chosen by Pope Francis in 2024. I would imagine he would select cardinals who would follow in his footsteps, but then again a conclave is driven by politics, not Christian moral reasoning.
