NASA conducted the first planetary defense test by deliberately ramming a spacecraft into asteroid Dimorphos orbiting 7 million miles from earth. The experiment opens a new scientific era in which sceintists gain the potential to face an approaching asteroid headed toward earth and direct it with precision off course to save the planet.
