Trying to eat healthy? If so, no doubt you've read all about the nutritional benefits of eating salmon more times than you can count. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, salmon is recommended by health organizations and professionals for its ability to lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation, reduce the risk of cancer, all on top of providing an excellent source of lean protein. But wait. There’s a catch that nobody mentioned.

Eating one fish from U.S. lakes or rivers, including freshwater or “Atlantic” salmon, is like drinking a month’s worth of contaminated water packed full with invisible “forever” chemicals that have been linked to liver damage and many cancers. It's so distressing when you think you're doing something that's good for you, only to learn that you may actually be ingesting poison. Looking at the menu, the decision between the salmon and the cheeseburger may be less clear.

Hats off to the countries in the European Union who are leading the charge to ban the use of these chemicals.
