Liberators in Action: Everyday People

When Hurricane Helene tore through the North Carolina mountains, the tiny towns of Chimney Rock and Bat Cave were left gutted with storefronts washed out, homes destroyed, and lives turned upside down. But from that devastation, something remarkable has taken root: everyday people, some from just down the road and others from hundreds of miles away, are coming together to rebuild—not just the town’s charm but the dignity and peace of its people.
Among them are a large group of Amish volunteers from Pennsylvania who’ve shown up quietly and steadily, sleeves rolled up and hearts open. Their labor is love in action. This is philanthropy at its purest—not money, but hands. Hands that give, build, and believe. And their example reminds us that we all have the power to help someone begin again.

Seeing this town being brought back to life is so heartwarming. And I loved the video showing the young Amish women putting up drywall. We all have skills we can share to help others. Sometimes it's just a matter of stepping out of our comfort zone. Thank you for the reminder.

Heartwarming is the perfect description of the volunteers' selfless enthusiasm for helping these NC communities rebuild.
I heard a related story about an area of NC hit particularly hard that leaned Democratic but was surrounded by "Red" counties. Party affiliation didn't matter when volunteers turned out in droves to clear debris and bring goods and supplies. Despite their differences, they're neighbors first.

This story illustrates that when people focus on things that truly matter to them, everyone wins. Whereas political affairs can grip, rattle, and entertain us, genuine civic life is about being useful and helpful to others.
Liberating those in need from life-disrupting travails promotes personal satisfaction and community wellbeing. Personally, I was so heartened to hear a young man talk about how much joy this work has brought him. It's the reward of being a liberator.

Such a great story of the ability of a genuine human spirit, it is so easy to forget that this potential is there, for everyone. Imagine if everyone, or the majority, responded to others in this manner, big or small. I can only imagine.
