Chances are you’re not worrying about humanity’s extinction just yet, but some scientists are weighing in on potential doomsday events, speculating whether or not our species is likely to survive.

As the dominant species on earth that’s survived about 300,000 years, it’s hard to imagine a lone virus or fungi wiping us all out, especially with medical science being what it is. But one can imagine asteroids hurtling toward us, the earth heating up, nuclear war breaking out—and now artificial intelligence turning against us.

In a few of the scenarios presented, global and societal inequities play a large role. The privileged have the advantage of "weathering a storm" while the less fortunate are...less fortunate.

Regarding sentient AI, how ironic it would be if the plot lines of several movies in recent years turned out to be not merely entertaining blockbusters but predictive warnings of what could come.
