Anthropic researchers have quit and are now sounding a 5-fire-alarm. It is claimed that AI is "out of control" and poses a real threat to humanity.

As if we needed something else to keep us awake at night, knowing that some AI experts believe the intelligence will have the capacity to become self-aware and deem humans obsolete in three years.

I think AI can be compared to the invention of automobiles whose advantages were obvious, but overlooked were the resulting pollutants that damage our bodies and create global warming. We could also compare it to nuclear power plants that are great for supplying us with electricity but have the potential to overheat and blow up like Fukushima's nuclear power plant accident that created widespread nuclear contamination.
Though AI can be beneficial in many capacities, the real question is, do the benefits outweigh the risks? I don't think they do because the known risks, many of which have been known for the last five years, are existential risks unlike any other. It's a new pandora's box, and we just don't know the full extent of what it may unleash. Apparently, its creators are well aware and many are now pushing back, not wanting the burden of future mass casualties on their conscience.
In my way of looking at things, there is only one thing we can do to stop the madness, or at the very least reduce the risks. Form community resistance groups to prevent its infrastructure from being built in all local communities. The more people who participate in resisting it, and that could include divesting from any such investments that may be included in your 401k, the more these companies will lack the money to move forward with their ambitious, irresponsible plans.
The idea that laws need to be written to manage AI sounds logical, but we are now coexisting in an era where laws are routinely challenged, broken, circumvented, or given to the power of each state where corrupt leaders now prevail. Even a constitutional amendment would fail to pass with the power and money these corporate interest have.
Best solution, don't indulge it, stay away from it, fight against it, unless they can prove beyond any doubt that it will never go rogue, never get into the hands of a bad actor, and will honestly cure every known disease on the planet. If any of those cannot be guaranteed, why risk so much?
