The Sky is Falling...The Sky is Falling!

Knowledge

These are the people who go around talking about all the bad things that are going on (i.e., the molestations, the mass shootings, the train derailments, and plane crashes, the economy’s downfall, the latest virus, the most recent hit and run, etc.), and are always predicting the worst. They constantly watch the news so it’s no surprise they’re informed about all the latest catastrophes.

I get that there are bad things happening all around us. But in most instances, there’s not much, if anything, we can do about it. Yes, it’s good to be informed, but continuously watching the news and hearing about stabbings, police chases, quarantined nurses, the death toll in Africa, house fires, and abandoned toddlers, doesn’t serve any purpose. What can we do? All that knowing does is plant the images in our minds where they can linger, and bring us down.

There are so many unbelievable and wonderful things happening in this life. Right now! Why not have those things be the main focus of our day? Wouldn’t that start us off on the right foot? What if we turned the news on and heard about an anonymous person making a large donation to families who lost everything due to a natural disaster? What if we watched a young girl with only four fingers play Bach’s Concerto in D Minor and receive a standing ovation? What if we heard about a doctor who reconstructed a burn victim’s face so that he could live a fuller life?

Imagine turning on the news and hearing those kinds of amazing stories. Maybe our hearts would be fuller, our steps lighter. Maybe it would inspire us to do better, to help others. The possibilities are endless.

Next time our Naysayer starts naysaying, let’s turn a deaf ear. We don’t have to listen. Next time we hear that the sky is falling, point out that it’s not; it’s just a little rain. And suggest they get an umbrella!

Even though bad things do happen, most of us don’t want to leave this life. Life does have unfortunate events, but they’re not the only things that define it. Let’s focus on the amazing things happening all around us. Then become part of it! Tag, you’re it!

It does seem at times that the sky really is falling, but focusing on our blessings and the goodness we have in our lives allows us to be our best selves for ourself and others.

Yes, exactly! Shifting the focus really makes a big difference psychologically and physically.

To give clients a new perspective on nutrition, I tell them that food is information that gives our bodies instructions on how to function and perform.

The media we consume is the same. To your point, it shapes our perception of other people, communities, and the world. Our hopes, optimism, or lack thereof are influenced by what we choose to take in.

I'm with you—good news, please!

I'll keep the good news coming. Whatever we take in comes out somehow; it makes an impact. Even though we may not realize it, watching or listening to something that is disturbing over and over again, takes an emotional toll.
