I just learned from the Ed Sullivan documentary that, despite featuring many Black musicians on the show, CBS didn't want Belafonte on, as they felt he was too polarizing at the time. Shortly after a one-on-one meeting with Sullivan, Belafonte got a call inviting him to perform on the show.
